Some people prefer being single. But many others are seeking and hoping for long term relationships. The problem is that finding a relationship in today’s world – especially here in a busy, techy city like SF – can be difficult, now more so than ever.

We spend more and more time indoors, keeping to ourselves. We’re on our phones with headphones on when we’re out. Meeting people has become hard, which means that many of us end up finding ourselves single for longer than we’d like.

When this happens, consider seeking out a therapist.

We typically think of therapy as a tool solely for a person’s mental health. We also know about couples counseling, and how many people seek out therapists to save their relationships.

But what about if you’re single? Why would a single person need to see a therapist if they don’t feel they have a significant mental health disorder?

  • Can Help You Understand Yourself – Before meeting any partner, it helps to understand yourself. Therapists help you gain more insight into who YOU are as a person, which not only can help you with relationships but can also attract those that are the right fit for you.
  • Can Help with Anxiety – Many of us struggle with anxiety in some form, and when you have anxiety, it tends to touch everything that you do. That includes dating and meeting people, as it leads to overthinking, or anxiety at the idea of putting yourself out there, and more.
  • Can Help Manage Life Traumas – Many times our history stands in the way of a successful relationship. We can explore life traumas to see what may be holding you back from truly giving yourself to your relationships or who you seek as partner.
  • Can Help with Confidence and Low Self Esteem – For those that are struggling with low self-esteem or self-confidence, therapy can help you build that confidence, allowing you to be the person you want to be and know your own self-worth in the process.
  • Can Help You Get Off Your Phone and Get Out There – Therapists can help with motivation, phone addiction, and more, so that you can get yourself to leave the house and explore the world.

In addition, a therapist can help you with BEING single. The pressure that we put on ourselves to find a relationship can be challenging, and there are situations where the right relationship isn’t out there. Comfort in being single is important both for your mental health/self-growth and so that when you do find the right relationship, it’s the one you want.
